Media Release From: Denise M. Moloney Community/Media Relations Manager, 352-797-3609 Re: Canine Assists in Apprehension of Hit-and-Run Suspect Date: August 14, 2014 On 08-13-14 just after 10 p.m., Hernando County deputies were notified of a possible Hit-and- Run crash near the intersection of Powell Road and Raines Road in Brooksville. Dispatchers in the Emergency Communications Center received reports that a pickup truck flipped several times and at least two passengers were ejected from the vehicle and were still in the roadway. Callers reported that the victims in the roadway were seriously injured and that one was pregnant and one was a child. The pickup truck fled the scene travelling westbound on Powell Road. Several deputies and the Sheriff’s helicopter, already in the air on proactive patrol, were dispatched to the area to look for the suspect vehicle. The Sheriff’s helicopter quickly spotted a 2008 silver Toyota pickup truck speeding westbound on Powell Road, continuing onto Elgin Boulevard. When ground units attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled. Ground units maintained communications with the air unit and promptly deployed “stop sticks” to slow and eventually stop the fleeing felon. Once the vehicle ran over the “stop sticks” the driver continued to flee from deputies, even with the tires beginning to disintegrate. The air unit continued to monitor the situation from above and provide updates over the radio. The driver of the Toyota initially stopped the vehicle in a yard on Prespare Road, but when deputies approached, he accelerated again. Once at the intersection of Northcliffe Boulevard and Century Drive, the driver pulled over again. A felony traffic stop was initiated by deputies. The driver, later identified as Charles Daniel Aaron, refused to exit the vehicle. Deputy Brandon Cox deployed K-9 Judge Topper to assist in removing Aaron from the vehicle. K-9 Judge Topper made contact with Aaron’s left forearm. Hernando County Fire/Rescue was called to evaluate Aaron’s injuries. Aaron was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the dog bite. A records check revealed an active warrant for his arrest from the Florida Parole Commission for being a conditional release violator (Burglary/Dwelling/Occupied Conveyance). Records also indicated that his driver’s license was revoked in 1996 for DUI. Additionally, the vehicle that Aaron was driving was reported stolen from Ocala. Charles Daniel Aaron W/M DOB/05-06-1970 was arrested by Hernando County deputies for the following: - Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding o Bond - $5,000 - DWLSR o Bond - $10,000 A hold was placed on Aaron for the warrant from the Parole Commission. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the Hit-and-Run crash.
