Media Release: Nelson School of Music board resigns, transitional board in place The Nelson School of Music (NSOM) Board of Trustees resigned today (Friday 1 August), with its resignation coming into effect at 5pm. The Board’s letters of resignation were presented at a meeting called to discuss matters associated with the calling of a special general meeting by members of the NSOM to be held on the 14 August. The special general meeting, convened by the Board upon receipt of a petition of NSOM members, proposes to deal with an alteration to rules of the NSOM, and thereafter the election of a new board. After being addressed by the representative of NSOM members behind the petition, meeting in committee, and taking appropriate legal advice with respect to the constitutional changes proposed, the Board took the decision to resign. Prior to its resignation, however, the Board used its constitution to co-opt a transitional Board so that constitutional issues could be addressed at the upcoming special meeting, crucial earthquake stregthening work, including the awarding of key contracts, could continue and so that business as usual activities at the school of music would continue to be supported by robust governance structures. “The outgoing Board members reiterated their commitment to the vision of a Nelson School of Music remaining a vital asset of the local and regional community and a nationally-recognised arts facility,” says transitional Board member and spokesman Mr Tony Stallard. “The outgoing Board and the transitional board are united in their view that the facilities and community of the Nelson School of Music are unique and worthy of preservation and enhancement. All Board members acknowledged the dedication and commitment of staff, teachers, benefactors and volunteers as well as their colleagues on the Board. “The outgoing Board has contributed a great deal of energy and time during a difficult period with the closer of the NSOM auditorium for earthquake strengthening,” said Mr Stallard. “A number of steps have been taken by the Board and management to advance the initiatives required in the planning for its re-opening. The process requires time, experience and dedication, and all of the Board participated in very difficult decision-making processes associated with the closure of the School and the planning of the re-build. They deserve the thanks of the NSOM members and the wider community for their dedication and commitment.” The transitional Board intends to communicate with the NSOM membership with a view to trying to establishing a workable constitution, says Mr Stallard. “It is imperative that earthquake strengthening work is not put on hold and is able to continue without interruption to ensure that the NSOM reopens as soon as is reasonably practicable,” said Mr Stallard. “That is what everyone wants and it is what everyone at the School has been working hard to achieve. “The NSOM has strong support at local and central government level and has the funding and sponsorship support needed to continue to deliver highly-valued outcomes for its community and region. A successful Winter Festival has just been completed and there is much work to do during the coming year. It is important that the Board moves forward with its members and the community.” The transitional Board will communicate with NSOM members and the community and the community about constitutional changes and the appointment of a new Board.
