Media Release: The pending bridge construction is a colossal and costly error. June 19, 2013 Dear Mayor and Council: We urgently request that you review the attached Alternative Vision of the Rossdale flats. We respectfully submit that the proposed route of the Signature Bridge is a costly and colossal error that renders the Rossdale flats as an unusable traffic corridor for decades to come. The attached plan shows that by simply directing traffic flow off the new Bridge down 104 street instead of 105 street; uniting River Road with 105st; and, adding a pedestrian arch beneath it, an opportunity to establish a forty acre Edmonton Central Park exists. The legislature grounds could be united with a green area from 98ave all the way to the river. Briefly, the advantages of this alternative vision are as follows: 1. Downtown Revitalization is enhanced significantly by this green area. 2. The cost of the signature bridge is reduced and visual appearance improved by a direct crossing. 3. Walterdale Bridge could be retained for biking trails and a tourist Street car to Whyte Ave. As well, demolishment costs are retained. 4. Traffic routes are stream lined, improving traffic flow at a very low cost. 5. Pedestrian access to the river valley is created at its most accessible point. 6. Embracing our history creates a tremendous tourist opportunity which could include an aboriginal cultural centre, the historic power plant and the docking of the Edmonton River Queen below. 7. The Green area could include a natural amphitheatre, a sandy beach, Fountains, tennis courts, etc. 8. The Fort Edmonton Cemetery is not violated again and a boardwalk is created below which unites us all to the river which defines are identity. Please carefully consider delaying the pending bridge construction.
