Meditations On The Words And Life Of St. Francis…….. The Example Of Christs Humility Humility, the guardian and ornament of all the virtues, had superabundantly filled Francis, the man of God. He thought of himself as nothing but a sinner, when in truth he was a mirror shining with all the reflections of holiness. Like the wise builder he had learned about from Christ, he wanted to build his own edifice on the foundation of humility. The Son of God, he used to say, left the womb of the Father and descended from heavens heights into our misery to reach us by word and example. Therefore, as Christs true disciple, he was careful to preserve a low opinion of himself and appear worthless in the eyes of others, keeping in mind the words of the supreme Teacher, What is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in Gods sight (Lk 16:15). He often used to remark, What man is before God, that he is and no more. ~ St. Bonaventure, Major Life, 6:1
