Mediterranean diet can reduce heart attacks Spanish scientists - TopicsExpress

Mediterranean diet can reduce heart attacks Spanish scientists have shown that the Mediterranean diet may counteract the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke in people with type 2 diabetes. High consumption of olive oil, legumes, unrefined cereals, fruits, and vegetables, moderate to high consumption of fish, moderate consumption of dairy products (mostly as cheese and yogurt), moderate wine consumption, and low consumption of meat and meat products. 7,000 participants ate one of three diets—a low-fat control diet and two slightly different Mediterranean diets. The participants were monitored for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and heart attack for almost 5 years. The key finding was that people with diabetes who maintained a Mediterranean diet faced no more of a risk of stroke than those without the variation, according to the research.
