Meet Autumn! Autumn is the newest little member of Dogs in Harmony. She was pulled from a high kill shelter this morning. I was at the pound last week and I was able to meet this little girl. She was scared and would not let Animal Control near her so they ask me to try. As I sat next to her, she was unsure of my intentions. After she completed her sniff test of me I reached to pick her up and she panicked. This was okay. She just needed more time. I sat there a little longer and when I reached slowly to pick her up she gave in to me. I held her close as I knew she must have had a rough life to have landed in a high kill shelter. Her poor nails were extremely long and desperately needed trimmed. She had obvious flea allergies as well. Her stray hold was up last Thursday and I knew I could not leave her there to die. I could not let her down. It was the hardest thing ever to put her down and leave her there but I promised her I would find rescue. I could see the sadness come across her face as she looked at me with those please dont leave me eyes. I was shattered. I try not to pull dogs without rescue as I do not have funds to vet them and I am full with fosters. However, today was a different story. I went to the pound bright and early as I knew they were full and a kill was very possible. I was there to help a fellow rescuer pull dogs for rescue. We had to temperament test them with fellow dogs first and I was praying the whole time they were dog friendly so they could go to the interested rescue. They all did great. Thank the Lord. So we pulled 3 dogs and opened up enough runs to prevent a kill from happening today. I had also planned on getting the Chihuahua out to see if she was kid friendly. She had a rescue willing to take her if she was. The rescues only available foster had small children so it was necessary to make certain she was okay with kids. This morning as I stepped into her run she came right to me, well close to me. When I reached to pick her up I seen a tear in her eye. I think she was so relieved to see I had come back. I did not know at the time if I could pull her or not as I was waiting on my friend and co rescuer to get there with her daughter so we could see how the chi reacted. Well, I knew as I held her closer I could not put her back no matter what. By the time my friend got there with her daughter I had already signed this little girl out and was bringing her with me with or without rescue. I knew since I didnt get permission from the rescue to pull her I may be liable for her vetting and for finding her a home or rescue. It didnt matter at this point. She would not be staying at the pound another minute. As you can see from the pictures she did just fine with Mia and Mia loved her in return. I called the rescue that I had hoped could take her knowing they perhaps could not. The lady had some bad news for me as she had a emergency situation come up and needed the one available foster to take that dog into her home. This was okay. She was still willing to help but I would have to foster until she had an opening. I told her I would look for another rescue just in case and she said that if I didnt find one she would try to work something out. This is an amazing rescue to work with and the lady in charge is a blessing to many death row dogs. I am thankful to have the privilege of working with her and the rescue. I was heading to vet to drop off a couple of the dogs pulled from the kill shelter this morning and had decided I would pay to have this little girl checked out and get her some medicine for her flea allergy. I first decided to call Lila Jean and talk it over with her and in true Lila Jean fashion she says bring her here, I will take her. This was an unexpected blessing. Dogs in Harmony has stepped up several times in the past couple of weeks to help me with several dogs that would have been euthanized without intervention. I am forever grateful to Lila Jean. We fuss like no other but at the end of the day we have the same goal.....saving lives. So off to Lila Jeans we went. Upon our arrival, Lila Jean trimmed her nails, bathed her, heartworm tested her (negative, thank goodness), and gave her necessary shots. This little girl has been named Autumn. Autumn is still a little scared but with a little Lila Jean magic she should relax soon. She seems to like all the other doggies and cats she met. Humans let her down and now we have to reassure her that we will not hurt her. We will not ever let her down. Animal Control trapped her in a live trap. That had to be a terrible experience for her. I am sure she is still terrified from that alone. She was also the smallest dog in the kill shelter and the dog next to her was a huge Great Pyrenees. He was a sweet fella but he was extra large. Autumn will receive all the love and attention she can stand now and once she has settled she will be spayed and then she will be looking for her forever family. If you have a home and a place in your heart for Autumn please contact Dogs in Harmony for more information. Written by Treena (also pictured).
