Meeting Summary : 29th Oct 2013 Last Tuesday night’s meeting was a Gabfest, meaning that we concentrated on speeches and a presentation. After Tricia had called us to order Annalisa arrived in a flurry to be Chairman, which role she stepped into with great aplomb. Sanat announced agenda changes, involving Andrew being Toastmaster for the First Speech Session. Tricia started the ball rolling with speech 5 from the Advanced Story Telling Manual “Bringing History To Life”. Her speech, titled Sentenced to Beyond the Seas: Olivia Gascoigne was about Tricia’s distant ancestor who was a convict brought out in the First Fleet. Olivia married Nathaniel Lucas and they settled on Norfolk Island. Sadly their twin girls were killed when a tree fell on the family’s dwelling, resulting in a poignant letter written by Nathaniel, which Tricia read out. Tricia is not unique in tracing back to Olivia because it is estimated that possibly 70,000 other people share this distinction. Christopher gave speech 3 from the Competent Communication Manual (‘Get to the Point”), the title of his speech being The Future of 3D printing. Christopher described how this new technology would revolutionise our lives by enabling us to build almost anything from pizzas to machine parts. After evaluations had been given by myself and Tricia we had a leisurely supper, where in Suzanne’s absence biscuits replaced our usual cookies and cakes. After supper, with the multi-tasking Tricia as Toastmaster, Anant entertained us with another speech from the Advanced Story Telling Manual, being Speech 2 “Lets Get Personal”. He started his speech, titled Battle of wits at an Indian airport, with the intriguing question “Have you experienced the Indian bureaucratic mind?”. He then proceeded to describe a confrontation he had experienced at Mumbai International Airport about 20 years ago where an official refused to allocate a seat to Anant’s two year old son, despite the fact that Ananant had bought a child’s ticket for him. The official maintained that the little boy was an “infant”, not a child, and could not be allocated a seat. A Caucasian supervisor solved the impasse by preremptorily overriding the official and granting Anant’s request. Sanat completed the speech complement of the night with speech 3 from the Public Relations manual (“The persuasive approach”) where he persuaded us to do our bit to prevent the increase in global warming. After evaluations by Vicki and Andrew Anant and Andrew (another multi-skiller like Tricia) gave a very informative and inter-active presentation about their recent installation of the Club on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and Google Plus, using the data projector, computer and internet connection to give us a “live” demonstration. Annalisa caused great merryment because she had already put a comment on Facebook (which came n the screen) using her Iphone while Andrew was in the middle of describing what had been done. A number of members asked questions and made comments (of a polite nature). The objective of these entries is to increase the Club’s publicity in social media to attract new members and to provide additional avenues for inter-action between members. However this also requires us to use these avenues, so I encourage you to do this. Finally, Eamon (who had been assisted by Ding Ding) gave a precise Timer Report, Anant gave a very helpful Master Evaluator report, and I concluded proceedings by presenting Eamon with a “First Timer” ribbon, Christopher with the Best Speaker award, and Vicki the Best Speech Evaluator award.
