Megan remembers Lucy … We were privileged to know Lucy for half of her life. Frank and Megan met Lucy through the youth program at Sherwood Uniting Church. Lucy was a Priority One member, then a youth group member (having graduated through Sunday School of course!) She was typical teenager, full of energy. When she did a run-away-from-home episode, she ran to our house (Sherwood to Oxley). I was quite surprised and in hindsight, honoured! But was thankful to be able to ring Liz and Angus to assure them she was safe. Lucy has always been a creative soul. One of her first presents to us was a print from high school art class. We still have it proudly hanging on the wall. I co-opted her to help some of the church kids paint some murals for the church fence while the Annual Congregational meeting was held. She did a great job, guiding most of the paint onto the plywood in an artistic representation, and even came back to do another the next year! Lucy also helped us when we began “Flashpoint”, a children’s worship service. This included more mural painting and some science experiments with Frank. Lucy began helping Megan with audio visuals (originally slides, then video tape) for YAF and Nexus. She then produced many in her own right. This led to the start of a TAFE course in AV. As a leader on Discoveries camp, Lucy was always happy to run some creative, artistic elective for the kids – clay work, glass etching included. When our first child, Marcus was born, Lucy was a willing baby sitter. When Frank spent 6 months in hospital in 1998, she and Liz were invaluable minders while Megan visited the hospital and kept some part time work going. It was wonderful to share many of Marcus’ first milestones – walking included! – with his surrogate aunty! Lucy has always remembered all my kids’ birthdays and always bought gifts. Always practical and useful – kites (last Christmas, thoughtfully given before we went to the beach!), mugs with hot chocolate sachets, swimming bags with treats inside, hand made cushions for each boy one year, a music quilt cover for Marcus another year. Birthday party preparations also included many piñata constructions. The kids wanted one, I wasn’t keen, but Lucy would come over in the week or so leading up to a party and slop wet newspaper over a balloon. Various themes saw several designs including a Golden Snitch (for Marcus’ Harry Potter party) and Buzz Lightyear (for Chris’ 5th birthday) constructed. Until her recent back injury, Lucy was always ready to wrestle with and play tickle wars with the kids. They loved piggybacks and stories, games and hugs. Holidays often included a visit by or a visit to Lucy’s place for the day. She would take the kids on their bikes down to the park to play soccer or fly a kite (well, attempt anyway!), feed the ducks and have fun. Our last meeting was 4 weeks before her sudden passing. She hadn’t been able to come to Dan’s 8th birthday party so came for dinner the week after. We had home made pizzas – her’s was the most creative and delicious of course! And she bought individual dessert pies for afterwards. She gave Dan a new, bright yellow boogie board – she knew all the others had new ones and he’d had hand-me-downs for years! Lucy then spent time with Dan constructing a praying mantis wooden 3D puzzle. She would always make sure she spent time with each child when visiting our house. The kids have said how much they will miss her from their birthday celebrations. Lucy loved children. She loved her friends. She love meeting new people. She was thoughtful and kind, generous and caring. She was creative and always learning. She was optimistic and funny. She rarely complained and always looked for the best in a situation. She loved life and we loved her. Thank you so much for so many things Lucy. We will miss you very much.
