Melanie Barton - 8 pm EDT (9 pm ADT) - Wed May 21 - Adam walked an estimated 70 feet today. Yes 70! They started him out on the parallel bars and he walked through them twice. It was the first time that I know for sure that he was smiling. Then because he did so well, they let him try a walker. He walked back and forth in the rehab gym three times. I was waiting for him at the end of the gym. When he got to me, he chose to give me a hug. His arms are still pretty weak so this was a lot of work for him. In the afternoon, a speech therapist came in and put some sort of purple cap on his trach hole, that would allow him to learn to use his voice again. The therapist tried and tried to get Adam to use his voice, but Adam wouldnt do it. After the therapist left, the Burns came in and said hi and Adam said hi back. I couldnt believe it. It looks like Medicaid hasnt finished processing yet and that is holding Adam at Dartmouth, but in the meantime, he is getting pretty good rehab while he is waiting and I am so thankful for that
