Melbourne Marathon 2014. Leading up to the Melbourne Marathon, - TopicsExpress

Melbourne Marathon 2014. Leading up to the Melbourne Marathon, I had been running well, with pbs this year in the 5km (19mins 29secs) 21.1km (1hr 33mins) and 42.2km (3hrs 48mins) With a forecast of 28-29 degrees I knew it was going to be a very warm morning for a run. I helped another runner with transport to the MCG. Had a chat with some friends also running the Marathon before I made my way to the start area. Had a good run up the hill to the first corner, with so many people around, it was a challenge to keep to 5min/km pace so decided to just run with the crowd and wait for some space which was when it came to running on St Kilda rd. Making sure I had water at the drink stations as I was carrying Staminade with me and also snakes (lollies). Running through Albert Park was quite tight as there was a change to the course in the park, felt good running back onto Fitzroy St, and once I got onto Beaconsfield Pde, it was a case of one foot in front of the other and try and stay focused as at this point it was feeling quite warm for me, made it to the turn around point ok and the run towards Elwood was where I had to take a few walk breaks, like previous marathons I just focused on something up ahead, eg, other runners, street sign, light pole etc etc. Turn around point at Elwood, it was great to see so many people watching the Marathon, receiving high 5s from the spectators was a great help to me. Once I reached the 30km mark, the walk breaks continued and I just focused on crossing the finish line. When I reached Domain Rd, I had to take a toilet break. Running past Federation square it was great to get a cheer as this helped me to continue running, Crossing the finish line with a new Melbourne Marathon time of 3hrs 57mins 21 seconds (3hrs 56mins 48secs net time) was an awesome feeling. Monday, legs are feeling sore but ok, am able to walk quite easily I am already looking forward to Melbourne Marathon #9. A big thanks to the volunteers and also to the people that were giving lollies out on the course, great to see people helping others
