Melissa Goines Makes Her Return to the Field: On a cool black evening in Schaumburg, IL the sports world was blessed with a sight not seen on the soccer pitch in close to a year. Melissa Goines (infamously Melissa Zimmerman) returned to the field after 8 month layoff from major knee surgery. It was a mixed bag of form from the once elite soccer prodigy. While her team fell to the defending champions, The Uncoachables, 5-1. The match started off finding Goines in good form assisting on the first goal of the match, allowing Real FC, to take a 1-0 advantage. The slashing run through the center of the Uncoachables middle third presented Goines with an open frame to put the ball away. However, in a deft display of skill, she found the correct angle to hit the flailing goalie and expertly deflect the ball to her on rushing teammate, Kim. However, the lead did not last as The Uncoachables found the net twice in short order to take a 2-1 lead into half. While the end result of the match, a 5-1 loss, was brought on by a series of late goals. The story of the day was the relatively uneven play of Goines throughout. While the glimpses of days past were there early in the match, the lack of fatigue and unfamiliarity of team chemistry hampered her all match long. In a late game keen bit of tactical maneuvering in the late stages of the match, Goines shifted into the backline, deftly avoiding all contact with the ball. One spectator, interviewed after the match, said, “I was absolutely thrilled to see such a legend play in the local league. Such a brave soul to put the boots on after a second knee surgery….Damn it, Mikayla stop pushing Ethan!” Remarks from the coaching staff were unavailable, as neither team has a coach. Real FC will be in action again next Thursday evening. Written and edited by Witty Banter Melissa Zimmerman Goines
