Melody Cortez has been working for our record label Blue Bamboo Music and she submitted one of my tunes for a licensing opportunity in a film. They responded right away that we are on the short list. They loved the track! Its one of my original tunes from my CD Talamasca. Talamasca was the first CD we made entirely in our own studio. My first release as both performer and engineer, using my first computer based DAW. We released it without distribution and very little national promotion, and it didnt sell very well but one track was one of the winners in the Jazziz Magazine Guitars on Fire competition, which came with coverage in their national magazine, and later they reprinted it in their book Jazziz - the Guitarists. Im listed in there among the 100 best jazz guitarists in the world. (I didnt deserve that but, as you can imagine, I was thrilled.) Okay, this is wild... we dont have the gig yet and I dont want to jinx anything, but if the track is selected for the film, the up front money will cover our losses on the whole project, long since absorbed and forgotten, and the back end money will push it into profitability, 15 years after its initial release! I cant tell you how gratifying that would be after all this time, and also that my amazing wife may be responsible for developing a new viable income stream from my original music. There are lots of great opportunities out there, but the many jobs I do... of performing, composing, producing, engineering, and a thousand other things... well, I just cant find enough time to do it all, and marketing too. With Melody taking up the slack, weve found a new way forward. My playing is improving because I have time to practice, and I find that I am about 200% more productive. If I eventually lose her to the corporate world again Ill have to find 5 people to replace her, but shell be leaving a much healthier company than she came into 2 months ago. She has definitely created an essential position at the label that will need to be filled from now on. Weve needed someone in this job for years, but Im positive no one will ever do it better.
