Members NEWS: Leighton O’Connor Featured Artist at Arts Fest Exhibition 2014 Beverly, MA - Endicott College School of Visual and Performing Arts and Beverly Main Streets have chosen the Beverly artist Leighton O’Connor as this year’s Featured Artist for the Arts Fest Community Art Exhibition at Endicott College. Each year an artist is chosen who best exemplifies the spirit of Arts Fest, and we are pleased that Leighton has accepted this honor. The Arts Fest Exhibition is true community collaboration. Artists who live in Beverly, go to school in Beverly, or are affiliated with a Beverly Arts Organization will have their works on display all summer in celebration of Beverly Main Streets, Arts Fest Beverly. Each year a call to artists goes out from March to May, inviting artists to submit a jpeg of their work to Kathleen Moore at Endicott College. These works are juried and the artists are informed of their acceptance into the exhibition. This year’s Arts Fest Exhibition will be held in the Grillo Gallery and Desnoyers Overlook at the Walter J. Manninen Center for the Arts at Endicott College from Wednesday, June 4 – Friday, August 15, 2014. A reception will take place on Friday, June 13 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. to celebrate the exhibition and the official kick off of Arts Fest Beverly that will take place on Saturday, June 14 in downtown Beverly. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. As Featured Artist, Leighton will have a prominent spot at the Arts Fest Community Exhibition and be recognized at the reception on Friday, June 13 at Endicott College, and his images will be used for print and web promotions. The works that Leighton will be exhibiting cover a range of years and subjects. Leighton is well known for his beautiful nautical themed images of the North Shore and the surrounding areas, and for this exhibition, the viewer will also see works from his travels to Alaska, The America’s Cup, the Galapagos Islands, and Ecuador. Leighton O’Connor was born in Beverly in 1963 and grew up across the street from Dane Street Beach where he lived for many years. He began his career with photography at the age of 14 for the newspaper and was added to the Sports Illustrated stringers list at the age of 17. Upon his return to Beverly in 1990, he has become involved with many local organizations. For Beverly Main Streets he has volunteered at and assisted with coordinating events, and has been on the Board of Directors as well. Leighton has also worked with the North Shore United Way, St. Peters Episcopal Church, North Shore Red Cross, Beverly Rotary, Beverly Homecoming, Farms-Prides Community Association, River House Shelter, Beverly Bootstraps, Montserrat College of Art, Beverly Arts Fest, and the City of Beverly. For two years Leighton was the Co-Chair of Beverly Cultural Council, and for many of the above mentioned organizations, has donated his artwork as well as his professional services through his marketing, web design, and photography. We are pleased to have Leighton as our Featured Artist this year. Be sure to visit the exhibition in June to see his work and dozens of other artworks made by Beverly’s active arts scene.
