Members of Congress react to Noras non-proclamation: Members of the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture are not amused by the Malacanang decision. A-Teachers Party-List Rep. Juliet Cortuna said that it is unfair for Aunor to be rejected as a result of her personal life, which reports have indicated to have been in shambles due to her drug problems. On the other hand, Abakada Partylist Rep. Jonathan de la Cruz called for a congressional inquiry into the issue. “I still believe Nora deserved the national artist recognition for her exemplary contributions to the art and the movie industry. I am not aware that personal life of an artist was being judged here,” Cortuna stated. The lady solon stressed that while Aquino may have the prerogative to choose who among the shortlisted candidates will be proclaimed to the rank of National Artist, he should have limited the criteria to the excellent contributions a candidate to the art. “Ms. Aunor inspired the Filipino youth when she excelled in her chosen form of art. She was a national pride, a national wonder who rose from virtual rags to stardom,” said Cortuna. For his part, De la Cruz said Malacanang should clarify the decision to the public.
