“Memories of the seaside” So many childhood memories coming into my nostril’s and mind, Of family holidays at the seaside and such happy times since long gone, Early walks along the promenade a daily newspaper to buy, Sea air gusting in your face that salty taste on the lips, Bringing teardrops to the eyes and tingling rosy red cheeks, All the smells of the sea mixed with seashells lying open on the seashore, Seagulls squawking overhead searching smelly seaweed for a morning feast, Of days spent on the beach, deckchairs with windbreakers to surround, A bucket and spade ever ready to bury Dad, or castles to build in the sand, The smell of the shell wet sand as sea and surf came crashing in, Big pots of tea to drink on the beach, a deposit of five shillings put down, Nights spent on funfair rides, smells of electric and rubber from bumper cars, Then dad would give two shillings to play on the penny arcade machines, But the laughing sailor and policeman where always my favourite by far, Drop a penny in and his chuckling laughter did start as he swayed side to side, For hours I’d stand and play as mixed aromas of delight filled the night air, I can still smell the fresh fish and chips frying, candy floss being spun around, Golden crunchy toffee apples, hot sugary doughnuts, and flaky 99 ice creams, I can smell the hot dogs cooking onions pilled high, with mustard drizzling down, The smells from all the rock shops, just how do they get the name inside, Oh alas, alas, alas... I might have mixed dementia and my body sways like the laughing sailor now, But the smells and memories within my nostrils will forever linger on, Of such happy, happy seaside times... Barry
