Menu APC chief accuses PDP of playing religious, ethnic politics A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okoi Obono-Obla, has accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of using religion and ethnicity to play politics and yet turn around to accuse the opposition of doing that. Obono-Obla, who functioned as the Deputy National Secretary of former Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), said following insinuations in some sections of Southern Nigeria that APC is an Islamic and northern party. Speaking to Daily Independent on Monday in Calabar, Obono-Obla said it was the habit of PDP to adopt these strategies to the detriment of the unity of the country, especially when it suits the purpose for which its members are seeking self-aggrandisement. “PDP plays an ethnic card, they play religious card and then they turn around to accuse others. “Otherwise, why should they make an issue out of the membership of the interim executive of the APC? It is just a ploy. “How can you now use the issue of appointment of interim officers to begin to play a religious card. “It is rubbish. Religion should not be a parameter for appointment. Extremism should not be a parameter for appointment. It is competence and the passion to serve. “In Gowon administration, about 80 per cent of those in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) were Christians. “The Supreme Military Council was also dominated by Christians; the Chief of Army Staff, General David Ejoor; The Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters, General Ekpo Eyo, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Akinwale Wey, Chief of Air Staff, Emmanuel Ikwe. “The only Muslim among the Service Chiefs was Kam Salem, and heavens did not fall. “So, what is the bid deal? Look at Moshood Abiola and Babagana kingibe; they were Muslims. People voted for them because they were okay in their consideration. “So, this people who are out to play religious card are agents of darkness and retrogression. “It is (Goodluck) Jonathan that is playing the ethnic card. He will go to the South South and create the impression that Muhammadu Buhari is a Muslim; Bola Tinubu is a Muslim and so on and so forth. “Then, he will go to the North and tell them another thing and then he will go to the West and tell them another thing,” Obono-Obla said. However, Obono-Obla said the PDP has deliberately used religion to hold the gullible hostage by ensuring that “There is stagnation, there is hopelessness, there is hunger. So people take solace in religion. They will tell you when you die you will enjoy.” Obono-Obla stated that all that will change when APC takes over power from the PDP in 2015, because there will be serious bliss in the country. Obono-Obla said: “For us in APC, when we take over from them, we will make Nigerians enjoy here. “There will be employment, there will be food and there will be security. This religion thing will die. “It is because the economy is down that is why people seek salvation in religion. It happened in America. “When America was in depression, there was a surge in religious extremism. So, Nigerians now seek salvation in religious extremism.” He said at the National Convention of APC where the substantive members of the National Executive Committee of the party will be elected, the positions will be equitably distributed according to geo-political zones in the country.
