MercerCo Volunteer We have another life saving opportunity in front of us for felines from our community. Later this month we can move 20 cats from our area into a state of the art, no kill facility in Massachusetts. We made this trip in January with fourteen cats, thirteen of which were adopted within two days of arrival. We, are two Mercer County animal advocacy groups once again working together. Southern WV Animal League & A.L.I.V.E Animal Services Group, Inc. We are asking you to join in so that all of us together can make a bigger impact. It is no secret that the population of unwanted / unloved felines is a huge issue in most every area of our country. It takes projects like this to help make even the slightest positive impact on the lives of these animals. Some of you are thinking, twenty cats isnt a drop in the bucket. In some ways, yes, you are correct, but look at it based solely on numbers. This is 20 cats who are no longer reproducing more unwanted offspring into the community. 20 cats who left to themselves would be responsible for the birth of 5 offspring each = 100 cats added to the population. If only half of those survive the rigors of living a free roaming life you have 50 cats producing 5 each and there is another 250 cats. Looking at it from this angle can show you how big a deal moving 20 cats really can be. These animals leave here on a van having been unwanted, unloved and in some cases abused or neglected. Most have simply been thrown away, put out to have to learn to fend for themselves. When they arrive its a total transformation for them. There are families lined up waiting to take them home where they will now be safe and loved, wanted and accepted as they deserve to be. These animals come into our care where they receive full vetting prior to heading off to their new lives. All are sterilized [exception be those who are still too young], they have all their felines vaccines including rabies. They are dewormed, receive flea treatment and other parasite control. Each one is combo tested to make sure they are free of feline communicable diseases. These once cast off Kitties are now highly adoptable and there is a place where they will find their homes quickly. All of this does not come without a price. Nothing ever does. On average it costs approximately $80 per cat for this trip as a whole. That $80 pays for spay/neuter, rabies, all feline vaccines, all parasite control and blood based testing. These things alone are a bargain as far as vetting goes. However the trip doesnt end with just getting the babes ready to ride. The van has to be rented, fuel, fuel and more fuel plus tolls. Then there is the driver who has volunteered 3 days of their time to make this happen, who needs to eat, sleep and shower. As you know everything we do is based on donations and our fundraising efforts. We are asking for help to make this trip happen again before kitten season comes again. If you have the full $80 to sponsor a feline please give and know how blessed you are for having it to give and how grateful we are that you chose to do so. For most people giving away $80 is not a feasible thing to do. If this is the place where you are as you read this then think about what you could give. If you only have two dollars that will help. When hundreds of people all chip in $2 it adds up so quickly. If you have ever seen a stray cat in need then stop and think about that animal now. It may be that it could be one of the ones to benefit from one of these trips someday. SWVAL is the group who will be providing the vet care for these 20 animals. ALIVE is on the transportation end of things. In an effort to keep finances simple it is easier to send donations to one location whenever possible. If you can help with this trip please send you contributions of any size to Southern WV Animal League, PO Box 1853, Princeton WV 24740 Paypal address is swvanimalleague@gmail We have been allowed 20 slots. Right now all of those twenty have not been filled so there is a possibility of being able to take shelter cats that would otherwise be euthanized. We are still working on the details of maximizing the passenger load. Each of these animals are required to have precise vetting at exacting intervals before transport. In order to meet those requirements the vet care for this trip must commence this weekend March 7 & 8. Please consider making whatever contribution you can to help these animals begin a new life where they will have all they deserve for the remainder of their days. {My name is Kathy Tabor.
