Message from us all at the pub to our friend: The Watt family - TopicsExpress

Message from us all at the pub to our friend: The Watt family are leaving the Maids Head, and retiring from the pub trade. Its been a very difficult decision to make and we have done our best to hang on this long but declining health problems have forced the issue to a point where we cannot go on. What started 2 years ago with Gary being rushed into hospital on the verge of death for 3 months, devastated us as a family but the support from our staff, customers and friends enabled us to push through that little while longer. However, with Jim losing his sight last year, much more pressure has been put upon Sandie to not only help Gary when needed but to also care for Jim on a more permanent basis, despite her own failing health, all while they both still run the pub. During these last few months our staff have been fantastic, learning new skils to help fill-in when needed, and take some of the load, and with that we have been able to continue a little while longer, but we have had to face up to the hard truth that we cannot continue any longer. We have run the Maids for 7 years now, during one of the most turbulent times the British pub trade has ever faced, with record numbers of pubs closing down all across the country, we have turned the Maids into a thriving success, fighting against the odds to run a good natured family friendly pub, that always has a warm social atmosphere and the entire community are welcome. We have a genuine love not just for working in the pub trade, but for this wonderful old building itself, along with all our customers and friends we have come to know over the years. The incredible support from the community has kept us going the last couple of years, and all these things make it very hard to leave. We are very proud of what we have achieved with the Maids Head, and will take away a great many happy memories, but the time has come where we need to put our health first, and take some time to enjoy a slower pace of life. We plan to go out with a bang however and have a couple of goodbye events planned between now and the end of Febuary, so keep a check on the pubs Facebook page for details. Once we call last orders on our time here and hand the keys onto the next landlords we will still be living around the area however, but will be joining you all on the drinkers side of the bar, so dont be afraid to come and say hello. All the best Jim & Sandie xx
