Mexico-Peru 2014 Lenten Reflection Lent begins this year for - TopicsExpress

Mexico-Peru 2014 Lenten Reflection Lent begins this year for me in an uncanny manner. I am flying by way of a brief visit to Tucson into Mexico City to immerse myself as much as possible into the Mexican culture and language. If a part of Lent is a dying to oneself in order to more fully live in Gods life; then in leaving Tucson and these United Staes I am also leaving and dying to my Italian American way of life for a short period of time to enter more deeply into the Mexican culture and way of life as well as their prayer and spirituality for a week. I will do the same the following week as I enter into the Peruvian culture and way of life along with their prayer and spirituality. My travels begin with being transported by friends to the Cleveland airport to fly into Atlanta and then into Tucson for a visit with family. Lifes journey takes us to many ports, even ones into which we dont particularly care to enter, like mega ports but we do. Then again, these ports do open us to other ports of entry. In discerning and choosing the right port, we need to depend on the grace of God and our own good judgment. Since Our Lady of Guadalupe is such a strong part of the Mexican spirituality, it is only fitting that one of my first visits is to the basilica dedicated to her. Mary and Lent come together here for me. Our Blessed Mother gave herself totally to God in becoming the mother of our Savior. Lent is a time for us to examine our own total surrender to God in the fashion of Mary and her Son. In preparation for my visit to Lima, Fr. Ernesto connected me to Padre Hector and emailed me a picture of him that P. Hector had sent. In return, I emailed a picture of me to P. Hector and began an email conversation with him. As I spend time in Mexico I hope to outline a plan with P. Hector for visiting in his parish as well as seeing some of Lima and a little of Peru outside of Lima. I arrive in Mexico freshly marked with the ashes of Wednesday that remind me that we are no more than dust and one day will return to dust. In this journey we call life, not just the journey from Tucson to Mexico, our life is truly brief to make of it what the Lord intends - that we become faithful sons and daughters of our God.
