Mian Qayoom elected President of IOK Bar Association Vows to strive for taking freedom movement to logical end Srinagar, September 06: In occupied Kashmir, senior lawyer, Mian Abdul Qayoom, was elected as President of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) of the territory.In the elections held at Sadder Court Complex in Srinagar on Thursday, Mian Qayoom defeated Ghulam Nabi Shaheen. After the announcement of results, both of them vowed to continue struggle for taking the ongoing freedom movement to its logical conclusion. Mian Qayoom bagged 398 votes while Shaheen got 177. Nearly 800 lawyers were eligible to vote but only 583 of them cast their ballot. Eight votes were rejected. Addressing the lawyers soon after the election results were out, Main Abdul Qayoom vowed to pursue the resolution of HCBA vis-à-vis the Kashmir dispute. “My utmost priority would be to strive for taking this ongoing freedom movement to its logical end and we will do whatever it takes,” he said. “We will do everything for achieving it. Whether it is to hold conferences, protest on streets, file petitions in courts, visit jails to meet detainees and under trials, visit places where human rights violations take place,” he said. G N Shaheen, who shared same barrack in jail with Mian Qayoom before their release after nine months in 2011, said, “It was battle of personalities and not the battle of ideologies as both of us are on the same page as far as struggle for freedom is concerned. I salute him and promise that I will continue to cooperate with the Bar Association.” Aijaz Ahmad Baidar was elected Vice-President, Muhammad Ashraf Butt General Secretary, Anwar-ul-Islam Shaheen, Joint Secretary, and Bilal Ahmad Wani, Treasure. The results were declared by Chairman Election Commission of the HCBA, Syed Manzoor.
