Michael Mini, historian and husband of retired Classics teacher Florence Battis Mini, spoke to Upper School students about World War One this morning. “It was the war of lost boys,” he said. Soldiers, as young as 16-years-old, faced a 50% mortality rate as they headed into the “carnage” caused by trench warfare and machine guns. The depressed English and German soldiers mutinied by fraternizing with the enemy: There are stories of Christmas carols sung across battlefields and photos of “enemy” soldiers trading caps and playing soccer.
