October 24 – Lee Cox (Kettering University) Understanding Autism According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 1 in 88 American children are identified with autism spectrum disorders. The increase in diagnosis over the past 40 years can only be partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. What are the causes of autism spectrum disorders? What can be done to better treat children diagnosed with autism? Join Dr. Lee Cox at this Your Health Lecture to learn more about autism and its effects on individuals, their families and our health care system, Thursday, October 24, at 7 pm, at Kettering University’s McKinnon Theatre. The Your Health Lecture Series is a collaborative community event sponsored by Kettering University, University of Michigan-Flint, Mott Community College, Genesys Health System, Hurley Medical Center, McLaren Flint and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine Flint Campus. Bio Charles “Lee” Cox, MD, is professor and chair of the MSU Department of Physiology. His chief research interest is neural plasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt to changes in inputs and is essential for brain development and function. A goal of his research is to gain insight into pathological conditions such as epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as developmental brain disorders such as Fragile X syndrome and autism.
