Middle America has a strange disease in its culture. People from - TopicsExpress

Middle America has a strange disease in its culture. People from other countries write me and ask about it. The disease is artwork 50 or 100 years behind contemporary art. I realized last night its not that people dont know contemporary art, but they prefer this old stuff.. or stuff that looks like old stuff. Im not sure how to talk about it without being a jerk but art is serious and should be treated seriously. Should be criticized. Some of this mutated culture would make its way to New York. The only place I recall showing it though was Agora Gallery in Chelsea which is a scam gallery where people pay money to show. How do I describe the work of middle America? I think many of you know it. Its like art learned from a cheap selection of Modern Art books from Barnes and Nobles but nowhere near as interesting as actual Modern Art. I just dont understand where it comes from? In this age of access to all contemporary art online, why? What is it? I love art and yet 99% of the work across the country looks like third rate variations on art made over 70 years ago. When you talk to dealers in middle America they say thats the market. This is the crux of the problem turning middle America into a viable art scene. It has to be changed because cities like NYC are too expensive but middle America needs to realize the art market is global and tap into it with good contemporary work. That is the only way real money will made by mid American galleries and the only way small American cities will become vital art scenes.
