Mighty Coyotes ManHandle Brookesmith Mustangs ......78-6 No one really expected much of a contest last Friday night in Brookesmith, but the fans of the undefeated Richland Springs Coyotes were certainly not expecting a very hostile and ungracious welcome to Mustang Stadium by the administration of the Brookesmith ISD. The Coyote radio broadcasters were initially denied permission to broadcast, and even asked to leave the premises....the school board members passes were not honored...and my own press pass was ignored by the learned Administrator manning the front gate of the stadium. No harm done, the Richland Springs broadcasters, Jason Lewis and John Reed were eventually allowed to pay and enter and broadcast using their own generator to supply the electricity. Just like two years ago, the Mustangs were not able to muster enough volunteers to man the chain gang handling the down and distance markers and the officials had to ask the Coyotes fans for volunteers. The Coyotes loud sideline music, which was banned two years ago, and called intimidating, was blaring from the Brookesmith sideline this year, but was met with equally loud Coyote fans yipping and howling at every Richland Springs touchdown....and there were plenty of em. The good people of Richland Springs hold no ill-will toward the fans, players, and students of Brookesmith ISD, frankly, the football program hasnt been competitive enough the last few years to warrant the Coyotes much thought at all. Maybe the good Doctor was just having a bad night.....or maybe its just Coyote envy, or maybe those initials really do stand for Post Hole Digger, to borrow one of my ol friend Goobs delightful and insightful homilies..Good ol Friday Night Football....gotta love it!!! This game was another halftime mercy-rule victory and it was not as close as the score might indicate. The lone Mustang touchdown resulted from a terribly missed call by the officials on a kickoff. The ball clearly bounced into the endzone and the play should have been blown dead as a touchback at that point, the Coyotes coverage relaxed, and the Mustang return-man picked up the ball and took off. J.B. Salinas ran him down from behind, but the Mustangs were gifted with a first down inside the Coyote ten yard line and scored one play later. That botched call was the Mustangs brightest moment, as the Coyotes once again allowed negative total yards for the game. Minus 24 yards rushing and passing on 26 attempts and 4 forced fumbles, two of which were returned for touchdowns, were all the Mustangs could manage from scrimmage. The Coyote offense tallied 328 total yards and scored on 8 of 14 plays from scrimmage.....all in one half of play. Jacob Cohn had a High School career scoring night with four rushing touchdowns and a catch for another score. Jacob ran the ball 5 times for 117 yards with scoring runs of 4, 1, 71, and 41 yards and caught one pass for 41 yards and a touchdown. He led the team in tackles with 5 solo tackles and 2 assists, 2.5 for losses, and blocked the Mustangs PAT kick attempt. Bryan Salinas scored on touchdown runs of 43 and 8 yards and returned a fumble recovery 37 yards for another score. Bryan completed 3 of 4 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. Bryan added 4 solo tackles, 2 for drive-stopping losses, and filled in nicely for the sidelined Justin Hallmark with 8 extra point conversions for 16 more points. Storm Teel caught two passes for a whopping 90 yards to set up two Coyote touchdowns, and added 4 tackles on defense, one in the Mustangs backfield for a loss. Storm had key blocks on several of the Coyote touchdowns. J.B. Salinas recovered a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown and added 3 solo tackles and 4 assists which included a sack and 1.5 tackles for losses. Hutton Lusty is moving better and better each week and scored on a 7 yard run. Hutton had a solo tackle and 2 assists, 1.5 for losses and recovered two fumbles. Colt Carlisle was in on three tackles including 1.5 for losses. Colt and J.B. Salinas wreaked havoc in the Mustang backfield all night and caused most of the fumbles with their speed rushes. Chandler Lusty had a shoestring solo tackle on special teams. The Coyotes offense is a well-oiled machine that is triggered by Jordan Burkhart at Quarterback, his pitch-backs are precise and his lead and downfield blocking are invaluable assets that dont show up on the stat sheet. The Mustangs lost four fumbles on QB exchanges...... The Coyotes never lost a fumble...a huge difference, no matter the opponent. Equally important contributors are the Coyote reserves who spend countless hours in practice running the oppositions scout team with little playing time on Friday nights. Hats off to Brandon Tharp, Traven Day, Jeremy Martin, Cody Pardy, Chandler Lusty, Justin Hallmark and Reid Blodgett. The Coyotes move to 9-0 on the season and 3-0 in District play, and take another step on the staircase....nine down and 6 more up ....on the Stairway to Seven. Next week is the bye week and there will be no game on Thursday or Friday night. Richland Springs will face the Cherokee Indians in the final week of the regular season at Coyote Field in Richland Springs. Go Coyotes Go!!!! Go Win State!!! Mike Cohn
