Mike has used an electric wheelchair for many years. He recently got a new one because the old one kept braking down. Medicaid will only pay for a new electric wheelchair every five years. Since the wheelchair is something he uses all day, every day, it wears out quickly. Mike says, “When (the wheelchair) gets to be four years old you start hoping you can make it to that five year mark!” There are some things to think about when ordering a new wheelchair. Mike uses a joystick to control his chair. It takes a bit of getting used because it can be very sensitive at first and might need to be adjusted. Another thing is the width of the chair. Mike’s new chair is wider than his old one. This is important to note if you need to access a vehicle or go through doorways. Mike’s new chair barely fit on the lift of his van. While some features of an electric wheelchair need to be taken into account as issues or concerns, other features are welcome and provide convenience and comfort. Some things Mike loves about his wheelchair is the joystick swings out so he can maneuver under tables and his desk at work. His wheelchair also tilts back in a laying position.
