Mikkelsen was born in Denmark 46 years ago and also has a famous brother, Mads Mikkelsen, who starred as the villain Le Chiffre in Casino Royale. But neither became actors until they were in their thirties. “I was having a ball,” he laughs, when asked what he was up to before his acting career. “I didn’t know what to do with my life. I was in the military and then I went to university to study biology. Then at some point my fiancée, who is now my wife, came home from a jugglers’ course and could juggle three balls after two days and I was sitting reading huge books in my first term. I thought, ‘This is ridiculous I want to do that’. So I was a juggler for five years and toured around Europe on the streets: Munich, Paris, everywhere. Then I got into theatre and then I applied for the drama schools and now I’m here.” - 2011
