Minibus driver to pay Dh 2.6 m in blood money Marie Nammour / 28 August 2014 His vehicle had lost control and rammed into a parked truck, killing 13 labourers. He has been sentenced to seven years in prison. The Dubai Traffic Court today sentenced the Pakistani driver of a minibus involved in a fatal crash with a broken-down truck in May, in which 13 labourers had died, to seven years in prison, and ordered him to pay Dh 200,000 in blood money to each of the victims families. The court cleared the truck driver, also Pakistani, of charges including causing by mistake others’ death and injury, and damage of property. The convicted driver will also have to pay a Dh 30,000 fine and the court ordered that his driving license be suspended for one year. He will be deported after serving his whole sentence. Driver Z.R. was found guilty of reckless driving and causing the death of 13 passengers out of the 27 that were travelling in his bus on that day, and also of injuring several others. The truck driver, M.A., told the traffic prosecutor that he had to pull over on the side of Emirates Road towards Jebel Ali due to a mechanical failure. He said that he had called for a mechanical assistance which was due to arrive the next morning. According to the case documents, the accident happened around 6 am on May 10 when Z.R., who was then driving fast, lost control of the minibus which consequently suddenly swerved to the right and rammed the parked truck. The verdict is still subject to appeal.
