Mobile Food Market is a reality... On Monday (July 22), the "Green Machine" began providing residents of 15 low-income neighborhoods that do not have full-service supermarkets with easier access to high-quality and competitively priced fruits, vegetables, and dried goods. The Green Machine is Memphis’ first mobile food market. It is a result of the work of more than 30 local churches, nonprofit organizations, businesses, foundations, and government agencies working together to eliminate food deserts and combat obesity within our neighborhoods. The Green Machine Mobile Food Market is a retrofitted former MATA bus that will make weekly stops at 16 public housing complexes, community centers, and health facilities located in many of the city’s more food-insecure areas. The Green Machine’s primary supplier will be the third-generation, locally-owned, Easy-Way Produce Stores; during the local-growing season more than 80% of the products sold on the bus will be grown within a 200-mile radius of the Bluff City.
