Modi, the frontrunner in this election, is seen as two extremes by people who love him and those who hate him. Many see him as extraordinarily hardworking, disciplined, incorruptible, articulate, and charismatic, who has demonstrated a dedication to superior governance and an almost missionary zeal to champion business and the economy. While others find him susceptible to some dangerous weaknesses: chauvinism, communalism, and authoritarianism. Our nations ethos is steeped in secularism and pluralism. And, if he wants to go far, Mr. Modi must re-craft himself as a man primarily about development, dwarfing his image as a communal bully.
