Mohajir: People who migrated from India to Pakistan are called Mohajirs. They sacrificed Two million lives for the independence of Pakistan. Mohajir (also known as Urdu-speaking people) is a term commonly used especially by Pakistanis to describe the Muslim immigrants who chose to settle in Pakistan and shifted their domicile after partition of British India. Large number had participated in the movement for creation of Pakistan in 1947. They shifted from the Muslim minority provinces to Muslim majority provinces within British India. Their common language is Urdu. Mohajirs are a Nation: Mohajirs are a separate and distinct nation. It has been stated in the “History of Ideas” – Volume III, that “Nation bears so many connotations in relation to human society that definitions vary almost so much as their historical manifestations. In recent times it has been normally presumed that a fully existent nation is a state and the state a nation. At times, however, when such a people as the Irish or the Jews did not have a territorial state, each was viewed as kind of a nation aspiring to national statehood” According to the International Encyclopaedia of Social Science (Vol. II and 12) “A nation is either synonymous with a state or its inhabitants, or else it denotes a human group bound together with common solidarity” According to Encyclopaedia America, Nation is a large number of people who see themselves as a community or group and who generally place loyalty to the group above any conflicting loyalties. They often share one or more of such factors as language, culture, religion, political and other institutions, a history with which they identify and belief in common destiny. The World Book Encyclopaedia defines as “A large group of people that unite for mutual safety and welfare. A common language, origin, history and culture usually characterise a nation. Nations that govern themselves independently may form states. The Serbs, Croats and Montenegrins formed nations” But until a year ago they were not states. a) they are bound together by common language, origin, history and culture and economic interests, and b) They are united for mutual safety and welfare. Presently the Mohajirs do not have territorial state. But they are a nation just as the Irish, , the Poles, the Croats, the Serbs and the Bosnians were considered as nations before the establishment of their territorial states. Mohajir Recognised as a Nation: Internationally, Mohajir were recognised as a nation similar to Punjabi, Sindhi, Pukhtoon and Baloch as a result of sustained struggle on international forums including the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations. The UN accredited NGOs that establishes nationhoods the MRG (Minority Rights Group) recognised Mohajir as a nation. Thereafter, the Time Almanac along with other nationalities included Mohajir within Pakistan. The Governmental websites also show Mohajir as a nation so do the world recognised universities, other educational institutions, Major think tanks and NGOs. Atrocities against Mohajirs: Since the independence of Pakistan Mohajirs are being discriminated in every walk of life. They want to live in peace and with the same honour and dignity as other citizens of Pakistan. Mohajirs felt like a conquered nation being systematically liquidated by a victorious force. They witnessed the humiliation and destruction of their historic culture, ruthless denial of development of their innate creative talents, and belittling of their historic role in the creation and building of Pakistan with their sweat and blood. Day in and day out, their innocent people were butchered. Massacre of 1964: During Presidential Election in December 1964 citizen of Karachi decided to support Mohtaram Fatima Jinnah, Sister of Quad-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah against Field Marshal Ayub Khan. Ayub Khan won the election and he decided to take revenge. He brought full of busses of Pushtoo speaking people from different parts of NWFP and attacked on Mohajir localities.
