Mon. March 23, 1942 12 1/2 hours flight time Up at 0530 and washed up. Our plane was a standby but Mike Messina was drunk and didnt show up so I had to take his place. As I ran down the ramp to the plane I rammed into Hunter and damned near killed both of us. I hurt my foot pretty bad. Took off at 0600. Hand Manitz for my second radio and hes good. The air was awfully rough and half the crew was sick. Sosnaski and Olson were the pilots and Sos spend half the day batting the breeze with me. A lot of people have trouble with him but we get along fine. Circuit was awfully quiet so I spend most of the day reading. Landed at 1820 and came to barracks, listened to radio for awhile, then to bed at 2130. Got a nice letter from Alice today. ELSEWHERE: In Burma, Japanese troops again attempt to get behind Chinese positions at Oktwin but they are again repulsed. Overnight, Chinese fall back to the main defensive line at Toungoo. Japanese bombing of British airfield at Magwe forces the British aircraft and Chinese Air Force 1st American Volunteer Group “Flying Tigers” to abandon the airfield. With only four aircraft left, American Volunteer Group moves to Loiwing, just inside China. To protect the seaward flank of Burma, Japanese capture the Andaman Islands in the Indian Ocean, 425 miles southwest of Rangoon. Japanese 18th Infantry Division lands at Port Blair, Andaman Islands, unopposed by the British garrison of 300 Sikh militia and 23 British officers. Civilians and the British colonial administrators quickly suffer execution and torture which will continue for the next three years.
