Monday 17th, Feb. Have a Glimpse of the Top News: 1. The crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which appears to have waned with the emergence of Alhaji Adamu Muazu as national chairman, may resonate in the next few months. Reason: The party is currently in a fix over how to handle the challenges posed by the aspirations of its governors most of whom have indicated interest to gun for the Senate at the end of their tenure in 2015. According to a highly placed source in the PDP, the challenge ahead of the party is two-pronged: allowing the second-term governors automatic tickets to the Senate even as the governors will simultaneously decide their successors. The second leg of the challenge is allowing the governors to go through the rigours of party primaries with the possibility of some of them losing out in the process. This, the source said, has the potential of breeding “bad blood with far-reaching implications”. As at the last count, no fewer than 10 of the PDP governors have their eyes on the Senate. They are Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Martins Elechi (Ebonyi), Ibrahim Shehu Shema (Katsina), Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Theodore Orji (Abia), Muazu Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Jonah Jang (Plateau). 2. Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has called on Christian faithful not to allow evil people take over the nation’s political podium. Obasanjo, who spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, advised Christians on the need to actively participate in politics. The ex-President made this call while speaking during the fifth anniversary thanksgiving service of the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King, a religious arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library. His words, “I want to say here that Christians should participate in politics. We should not leave politics in the hands of the evil ones who cannot offer this country any good,” he said. 3. Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state has declared that only God can choose the next Governor of Rivers state. Even as he prayed and wished for someone who will build on his numerous achievements in Rivers State, he said such person would best be chosen by God. The governor was speaking at St. Barth’s Anglican Church, Bera Deanery, during Senator Magnus Abe’s thanksgiving service in Gokana Local Government Area of the state, weekend. 4. The APC, through its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has accused the Police of being selective in the enforcement of the ban on political rallies at airports. The party is accusing the Police of allowing PDP to enjoy such rallies, citing the recent rally organized at the Bauchi airport to welcome the new PDP chairman, Adamu Mu’azu. 5. On a sad note, over 90 people were on Saturday night at Izghe village slaughtered by the some islamist Boko Haram terrorists. Report says several people have abandoned their homes, exposing them to more danger. 6. Indications emerged on Sunday that three members of the Senate, Senators Solomon Ewuga (CPC, Nasarawa North), Chris Anyanwu (APGA, Imo East), and Ehigie Uzamere (ACN, Edo South), are now set to defect to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Report says what may likely stall their decision is the Senate’s resolve not to deliberate on such matters pending the resolution of the outstanding court case. 7. Mustapha Umar, the Boko Haram member who was sentenced to life imprisonment for bombing a plaza housing the offices of some newspapers, including Thisday, in Kaduna in April 2012, has appealed his conviction, saying that the trail judge who convicted him erred when he said that the accused proved the case beyond all reasonable doubts. He said that there were no reliable evidences to show that he was guilty of the crime. 8. The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Tunde Ogunsakin, has promised to restore peace among warring factions in the state. Ogunsakin who was recently posted to Rivers State as the new police boss, said at a send forth party organized on his behalf by some of his friends in Lagos that one of the first major thing he hopes to achieve as the commissioner in Rivers State is to see that normalcy returns. 9. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have dismissed reports that the body has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan for re-election in 2015. In a statement made in Kaduna at the weekend by CAN publicity secretary, Sunday Oibe, the body said that the speculations that CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has declared his total support for President Jonathan’s presidential ambition was aimed at polarising the Association. He described the rumour “as false and a ploy to cause confusion and tarnish the image of the Association.” 10. An Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday remanded a 49-year-old businessman, Wale Akinusi, in prison custody for allegedly defiling his 17-year-old daughter. The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, did not take the plea of the accused, and ordered that he be kept in prison custody pending the advice of the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
