Monday 8th July 2013 RELEASE: IMMEDIATE Sandra Overend looks forward to Twelfth celebrations Ulster Unionist Party Tourism Spokesperson, Sandra Overend MLA is looking forward to the annual Twelfth of July celebrations as a great day out for all the family, but also as an event which has significant tourist potential for Northern Ireland. Mrs Overend commented: “The annual Twelfth of July celebrations are always a brilliant occasion, and with the superb weather forecast for this week, once again promise to be a fantastic day out for all the family. With demonstrations taking place up and down the country, collectively “The Twelfth” continues to be one of Northern Ireland’s best supported events. “With the opportunity for everyone to enjoy the colour and music, the fun and festivities, to look back in commemoration and look ahead to a more confident and assured future, this is an event that is looked forward to by thousands of people every year. “I know that people travel from all over the world to attend the Twelfth of July celebrations in Northern Ireland and I am of the opinion that Northern Ireland can and should share this event and encourage those who have never been, to come along and enjoy the festivities. “I recognise the efforts put in by the Loyal Orange Lodges behind the scenes to help create a festival atmosphere open to all, and to work to help others to understand our cultures and traditions, and I am sure that this work will continue. “I would also wish all Mid-Ulster constituents whether attending the Magherafelt demonstration, where I look forward to attending with my husband and children, or Castlecaulfield, along with my parents and siblings, a successful and enjoyable Twelfth. This event is a great chance to take in the atmosphere and get out and about and speak to constituents about the issues which concern them. “A report published earlier this year by consultants RSM McClure Watters revealed that the Loyal Orders and marching bands generate almost £55 million in economic and social benefits for Northern Ireland each year, highlighting that along with the valuable cultural role that these events play, they also provide a tangible economic return. “I hope that all demonstrations across Northern Ireland pass off peacefully and successfully, and with more and more build-up and associated events, and increased numbers of shops opening to facilitate parade goers and others, that we take the chance to maximise the tourist potential of the Twelfth of July celebrations. I wish all parade participants and supporters an entertaining and enjoyable day out.”
