Monday | June 16 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him (James 1:12). A line in a popular song tells us: “Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” That is a true statement. But, Scripture tells Christians more than the truth found in that song. Specifically, persevering under tests, or trials, causes us to be “blessed.” This verse begins, like the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12), with the word “blessed.” To be blessed means to be happy. This verse concludes James’ instruction on trials. In verses 2-12, James instructs believers to do three things during trials. First, we are to rejoice during trials (verses 2-4). Second, we are to ask God for wisdom during trials (verses 5-8). Third, we are to persevere during trials (verses 9-12). Perseverance is more than just gritting your teeth, knowing that you will survive your current hardship. And perseverance is more than understanding that if the present trial doesn’t kill you, then it will make you stronger. For Christians, perseverance involves trusting God during the trials of life. Even if we see nothing good coming out of our trials, we can know that the Lord Himself (according to this verse) has promised us “the crown of life.” This metaphor refers either to rewards granted in heaven or simply the reward of being with God in heaven. In either case, God rewards our perseverance under trials. @daily prayer: O God, thank you for this promise of blessing for your people as they persevere during trials. May we honor you as we trust you during our trials. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
