Monday Motivation Small things count. Ask John Fawkes. He piloted a B-17 during World War II, and in one battle encountered flak from Nazi anti-aircraft guns. Even though the planes gas tanks were hit, it did not explode; Fawkes was able to land it safely. The next day he asked his crew chief for the German shell, to keep as a souvenir of his good fortune. The chief explained that not just one, but 11 shells had been found in the fuel tank, and none of them had exploded. Technicians opened the shells and found them clean, harmless and, with one exception, empty. The exception contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it a message had been scrawled in Czech: This is all we can do for you now. A brave assembly line worker had been disarming shells when he scribbled that note. He couldnt end the war, but he could save one plane. What a moving story. The worker realized he could do something. And he did it! Its the same with healthy living. By now you know dozens of rules and suggestions for healthy eating-- eat more fruits and vegetables, less red meat, more soluble fiber, less refined carbohydrates, and so on--and although you may not be able to practice all of them, you can certainly make two or three a part of your life. --Joe Piscatella
