Monday, final post of the day. First day of work, or probably - TopicsExpress

Monday, final post of the day. First day of work, or probably should write that as "first day of WORK!" Two activities took up the morning 8:30-12 noon: knitting instruction for young girls in the camp dining room, and reconstruction of two houses near the church. In the afternoon 2-5, knitting instruction for older teenagers and women, and continued work on the two houses. For one house which was primarily a wooden structure, the interior walls and roof were removed and preparations made to erect new interior walls of concrete block. This involved digging trenches through the concrete flooring to install the new interior walls, and removing the dirt and debris from that trenching. On the other house which was further along in the process, the existing concrete exterior walls were heightened to support new roof beams, and eventually sheets of metal roofing material. The knitting projects in both morning and afternoon classes was the same: knitting a long sash that could be worn as a neck piece, a headband, or a belt. Most of the students grasped the concept right away and finished early, and the knitting team members devoted themselves to working one-on-one with the knitters who needed help. It was a genuine pleasure to observe several knitters return to their homes and immediately show other family members what they had made and the instruction sheet for that craft. We welcomed a staff member from the Diocese of the Dominican Republic in the afternoon: Charlie Nakash, an American missionary stationed in the DR who specializes in construction. Charlie had planned our construction activities and made sure adequate supplies were on hand for us, and will be here until Tuesday to help us as needed. Tuesday schedule: more of the same.
