Mondays Tip of the Week! _____________________________________________________ Lower Unit Your outboards lower unit is vital to the engines performance. Simple maintenance procedures, regularly performed, will give you hours of trouble-free enjoyment and increased value. This can be done by doing the following: • Remove the prop and apply marine grease to the prop shaft. • Remove the lower drain plug and check the color of the lubricant, if you notice anything entangled around the propeller shaft. If your lubricant is white or milky in appearance, water has entered your gearcase. Your lower unit should be disassembled and inspected, and its seals should be replaced before using your outboard again. • Change the gear lube. Eventually, the extreme pressures exerted inside an outboards lower unit will break down a lubricants effectiveness. Any kind of good gear lube (we use Yamalube or Mercury) will do if used according to the schedule in your owners or service manual. For DIY-ers, be sure to replace the vent and drain screw seals each time. Or you can bring it in to us and we will be glad to check all of this for you! All of this is just to help protect your investment!
