Montlake Recap 6/8 The season at Montlake opened with a beautiful day last Saturday—the sun was out, the breeze was light, and the grass was thick and firm. The characteristic Montlake bog effect made the air a bit heavy, but the warmth and the moisture in the air softened the disc a bit. It stuck to the hands a bit more and traveled true and sure. When all were finally assembled, Ed, Scott, Dallas and Fleetwood took up White to battle against Sam, Shurtluff, Barrett, and Jeff. The teams were well balanced and it resulted in 3 highly contested games. Dark prevailed 7-5 in game 1 by taking advantage of White’s turnover-prone offense. With a field that was well proportioned for 4s, Dark chose to grant the long pass by playing under the defender. White never found a rhythm for that long throw and Dark was able to harass receivers into drops or watch the disc sail long. White changed tactic in game 2 by moving laterally a bit more, keeping passes tighter, and looking for one or two more throws before looking to the end zone. The result was a 7-5 White win, but it did not come without a taxing effort. Due to excellent D from both sides, no point was easy. And with the heavy air and thick pitch, we all felt a bit gassed. In the rubber match, we chose to play straight to 7. Dark started the game with a bit more energy, took an early lead and ket it for most of the game. With the score at 6-4 in favor of Dark, victory seemed a forgone conclusion, but White was not done. They received the disc and made a hard-earned score to decrease their deficit to 2 points. Dark then made perhaps their worst mistake of the game, tossing their first pass of the drive right into the ground. White recovered it and made the score in one pass. Suddenly, a game that seemed out of reach for White was in sudden death—a 1 point game with White pulling. Playing a strict force-flick defense, White was able to lead Dark into an all-or-nothing pass for the end zone. Unfortunately for Dark, it resulted in nothing. White recovered the disc and made the final point. With the Roanoke so close, reconciliation between Whites and Darks was easily attainable. The beer was cold and the patio shaded. Tomorrow promises to be another wonderful day—highs in the mid 70s, light cloud cover, and mild winds. Let’s get to the bog at 1:00 PM PDT.
