More Children Getting Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes among children in the United States is on the rise, elevating from 24 per 100,000 kids in 2002 to 27 per 100,000 boys and girls in 2009. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body makes little or no insulin, the hormone critical for allowing sugar to enter cells to produce energy. Unfortunately, this condition is often misdiagnosed during childhood. Many researchers suspect that a combination of genetics and environmental exposures are the most likely the cause of this disease, and developing ways to reduce or avoid “triggers” will be vital in the prevention of type 1 diabetes. - WebMD, December 2014
