More HULK stuff to share!!! Toughest thing about doing a cover is to make your STAND OUT from the crowd of other covers that month (ask any editor of any magazine on any subject about how hard that can be). So, here is a look at the original artwork from one of my The Incredible Hulk covers I did at Marvel where I was trying to do something different so potential customers would notice it. The theory is to take the title and mess around with it. In this particular case it hopefully accomplishes two things: 1) The logo you may have seen a hundred times in its original state is always very straight and organized...so by pushing the letters to the side it breaks that normal view a reader may be use to. 2) Next, I put Hulk directly as the reason the title was being messed up in the first place, so it also changes the readers perception, because on 99% of all covers, the hero is oblivious to the logo and the corporate name and the price, etc. that fills out a standard comic book cover. But heres the thing...you cant over do a gimmick cover like this (I may have only done this once during my The Amazing Spider-Man duties. If you do, then it doesnt resonate nearly as much. So these kinds of covers need to come with the feel of them being rare. Lastly, this type of thinking for covers has been done since the dawn of comics and comic strips, so I am in no way saying that what I did is wholly original (sometimes fans misread what I am posting). I put this up to merely share some of the process that I have trained myself to go through in each of the tasks given to me. You will also see a photo of the actual printed comic cover (Hulk is GRAY because that was the color he was in his very first issue way back in the early 60s), as well as a pencil ROUGH for a beginning idea for a cover (I needed to submit these types of sketches for prior approval).I was, during that time trying to make the Hulk ugly and much more monstrous looking than the green version). And I threw in a photo, taken today, on a panel for an upcoming Spawn issue from Image Comics. TODD
