More Hints & Tips - Soil preparation Clear weeds from the area to be turfed. This can be done by using a non-selective herbicide, such as Glyphosate or Round-Up. Ideally weeds should be sprayed 7-10 days before removal. If the area requires excavation, this should be done once the herbicide has taken effect. For clay based soils, apply gypsum prior to rotary hoeing, then cover with turf underlay. For sandy based soils, apply organic matter or compost with coco peat to improve the soil before adding your turf underlay. Adequate drainage is essential for a successful lawn. To avoid drainage problems, ensure soil gradient slopes away from housing foundations or pathways. Rotary hoe, or cover area with good quality turf underlay with a composition of 70% sand to 30% soil to a minimum of 50-100mm deep. To calculate for the required soil needed use the formula (area x depth x 1.6); for example: 65m2 x 0.05 (50mm) x 1.6 = 5.2 tonnes or 65m2 x 0.10 (100mm) x 1.6 = 10.4 tonnes. Rake area to a fine smooth finish.
