More cuts to veterans: The Harper Government pounces We are learning today, in a letter sent by the Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs, that the Harper government is in the process of sending out close to 300 “work adjustment” letters to staff at Veterans Affairs. That of course is just political speak for telling hard working staff that they are losing their jobs. The decision to announce these cuts, just as the House of Commons adjourns, is brazenly cynical and cowardly - a clear effort to avoid the House of Commons and parliamentary scrutiny. The Harper government is in deficit, and has increased the debt of this country by the tens of billions of dollars. This terrible fiscal situation is Harper’s own doing - but in an effort to “balance” the deficit at all costs, they are doing it on the backs of veterans and the people who day in and day out, serve them. While these job cuts hurts veterans and the front line services they need, these cuts backs hurt Island families and communities. It is just wrong. I want to say my thoughts are with those receiving these letters and their families.
