More info - Copied from Shannons page: ******* Well I have asked for you all to cross you fingers and wish me luck over the last little while with nothing much more said. Some of you knew what I was up to and I thank you for your support and others may just be tuning in. Well about a year ago I crossed paths with Janice Caves-Frankland through Carla Cheney and we decided it was time to see a change in Ottawa with respect to the sale of pets in pet stores. We gathered signatures and shared stories together while other groups such as PAWS were doing the same. We were writing letters and sending emails. Trying to be heard. As the old saying goes-two heads are better than one. After joining forces with the aid of others on the same journey such as Kasey Dunn we realized this could and will be a reality for our city. PAWS secured a meeting with one city councillor and I another. We really didnt think wed get this far before the election but with retiring Councillor Doug Thompson on our side we had to act fast. We were invited to speak at the open mic session of Councillor Thompsons Rural Affairs Committee meeting where we had the attention of 5 city councillors and many other candidates in the audience. We asked them for an amendment to by-law 2011-241 with respect to the sales of puppies, kittens and rabbits. We told them about the almost 3400 animals within 160km of Ottawa looking for homes today. We explained how the CKC and the APA do not allow breeders to sell dogs to pet store. We explained how consumers are often fooled into believing they are purchasing purebred dogs. We asked them if they saw a problem with almost 13k animals being admitted into shelters and rescues in our area annually. We also pointed out the benefits of satellite adoption centers and the partnerships with rescues. We told them that 57 other jurisdictions have already successfully put restrictions in place. They were surprised to hear that 5 Ontario municipalities are apart of this number and another 6 have it on the table. We most definitely got their attention and now they will make a recommendation and refer us on. So thats what Ive been up to and I thank those that had to listen to my speech over and over! I sure hope you will continue to show your support by making sure you have added your signature of support or better yet, put it writing. And heres a sad little fact for you: 18 rabbits were surrender to our small local rabbit rescue last march after Easter, 18.
