More on collecting comics. (My lifelong obsession) As I stated in a previous post....REPRINTS!! If you dont collect for the value but rather the love of the hobby, this is a great way to obtain what is otherwise unobtainable. Again I use my collection of Amazing Spider-Man as an example. Marvel tales is a terrific series that ran from the late sixties until the mid nineties. They reprinted many of the ASM Spider-Man issues from #1-283. For a time Marvel Tales featured Marvel Team Up reprints but went back to ASM. Although some are nearly as old as the original comics, they arent nearly as valuable in terms of money. However, there are a few issues that do stand out as collectible and run a little more than the others. For the most part though, you can can acquire a pretty nice collection by spending very little. I love Marvel Tales because they present stories that I could have never otherwise have been exposed to. Starting with issue #138 - #190 I have the entire first 50 issues of ASM. The rest are rather broken up and scattered after that but they are cheap enough that fill ins are easily gotten. My favorite of the Marvel Tales issues are the ones that reprint the original cover. It was around 1987 that they stopped doing that and had in house artist pencil their own versions. Todd McFarlane was very hot and in demand at the time so he did a long run of covers. Most of his covers are after they started reprinting Marvel Team Up in place of ASM though. Although I like the alternate covers, it just makes the whole thing seem a little off. The interiors are still the same though and thats what counts. Heres a few pics of part of my collection. Ive added labels to each comic to put them in order since Im collecting them as Amazing SM and not necessarily MT. Also, Ive included a side by side of the MT alternate cover and ASM #256 original. I prefer the original, it tells a story. I purchased the original at Booktrader in Rocky Mount in the late eighties. It was published in 1984 with the reprint in 1992. Its held up very well over the years but I do notice a definite pop to the colors in the reprint.
