More pictures of the damage from the earthquake this morning. And sadly at least three people have suffered critical injuries. Governor Brown has also declared a State of Emergency in Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties. Weve also cancelled our 49ers special on Levi’s stadium that was going to air right before the game today. I was going to anchor it with Claudine Wong. But we decided that it just didn’t feel appropriate to air that show, when so many people are hurting because of the earthquake. Instead we’ll do it before another 49er’s game later in the season. I talked to my kids this morning about what to do in the event of an earthquake. Neither of them has ever felt one. I’ve actually never been in a major earthquake either. Growing up in Berkeley I felt a lot of minor earthquakes, but nothing ever fell off the shelves. I was working in Rhode Island when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit. I came out here to cover it. I will never forget seeing the crushed cars under the freeway that collapsed in Oakland. There’s no comparison to seeing that in person. It was awful. If theres one positive thing about an earthquake like this, its that these kinds of situations always have a way of bringing out the best in people. And despite all the bad news we hear day in and day out, I still believe that down inside people are inherently good. And thats why I know there are going to be a lot of people lining up today to volunteer. Neighbor helping neighbor. Thats what its all about to me.
