More reasons to love my mother. When I was growing up in Hyde - TopicsExpress

More reasons to love my mother. When I was growing up in Hyde Park, she helped start the Hyde Park Study Center, an after school drop in center for latch key kids who prob didnt have latch keys so they would have a place to go, to study, to get a snack and help w their homework. I dont think this was funded by any government agency. A better historian than me might know. What I do know is that it was mothers who got together and wanted to do something for the less advantaged kids in the neighborhood, many of whom were African-American. So these mothers did not wait for anyone to give them permission. They rented a storefront and outfitted it w furniture and books and made themselves available. My mother grew up very poor and also knew the advantage of education which transformed her life. I loved that place. I was maybe in the fifth grade when I went. I still remember reading a big print biography of Jane Adams and the delicious cheap cookies that we were not allowed to eat at home. I love my mother and the other fierce mothers w whom I grew up who felt a responsibility to care for all children.
