More than 1,000 soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) placed U.S. flags on veterans’ graves at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, and the United States Soldiers and Airmens Home National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., on May 22 preceding the Memorial Day weekend. For more than 40 years, The Old Guard has honored veterans during the annual “Flags In” operation. Approximately 220,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery were honored along with 7,300 niches at the cemetery’s columbarium and 13,500 graves at the Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery. Old Guard soldiers remained at the cemeteries over the holiday weekend to straighten or replace flags as needed. The flags were removed during a “Flags Out” operation earlier this morning.
