More than 30 firefighters from eight Northshore districts responded to a commercial structure fire north of Covington early this morning. At 2:42 a.m., an employee who lives on the commercial site at 17440 Hard Hat Road awakened to the smell of smoke and observed flames on a surveillance camera on the site. He called 911, and the first engine from St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 12 was on the scene in three minutes. The structure was occupied by Riecke Development and Construction, and by SECO Properties, a property management company. The building had heavy flames and smoke at the time of arrival, with extreme heat, and FD12 personnel called for mutual aid. Firefighters and equipment from Districts 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 13 responded to assist FD12 personnel in fighting the blaze in sub-freezing weather. A total of seven engines, five tankers, two rescue vehicles, two ladder trucks, two medical units and seven support vehicles with a total of 35 firefighters responded. The fire was defeated at 6:50 a.m., but overhaul on the site will continue for several hours. Investigators from FD12, the State Fire Marshal and ATF are probing the incident. There were no injuries. Two dogs who lived on the site also escaped unharmed. We are very thankful, as always, for the mutual aid of our neighboring fire districts, said FD12 Chief Darrell Guilott. We are working diligently with state and federal officials to investigate this event.
