May the Lord richly bless you today around the globe. I am Senior Pastora of Jesus Is Lord Fellowship Dr. Diana Brevan. Let us prepare ourselves and open up your Bibles to Acts chapter 3 for Today’s Message The Power of the Name of Jesus We remember the story well. Peter and John, not long after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, went up to the temple to pray. Up – because the temple was on high ground in Jerusalem, nothing was higher. A man who had never walked from the time he was born and who sat there hoping for mercy each day and begged so that he could eat – this man, a crippled beggar asks Peter and John for money. Peter says, “Look at us” and when he got the beggar’s attention says the well known words: But Peter said, Silver and gold have I none, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk! (Acts 3:6 MKJV) AND the man does! This created quite a stir in the Temple as the man could not contain his joy and now that he could walk, he is jumping around and praising God. He knows who healed him. With all the commotion, Peter sees a chance to preach about Jesus, the One who did this. Always, preaching and teaching go with healing – in order to point to Christ. Peter too waited until the man gave his full attention – he didn’t attempt to heal with the man distracted in any way. Peter then says the words Therefore repent and convert so that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord. (Acts 3:19 MKJV) And many believed. The temple guards came rushing up, seize Peter and John, put them in prison overnight. The next day as our reading tells us, they face the daunting ‘heavies’ of the Temple – the same ones Jesus had stood in front of not so long ago –the Sanhedrin. The high priest and his offsiders must have had a dilemma for they went to the temple often enough to have seen the crippled man at the gate called Beautiful. Beggars often claim their turf – like those with stalls at the markets. So he would have been seen outside the temple every day. We are that he was over 40 years old – (For the man on whom this miracle of healing occurred was more than forty years old. (Acts 4:22 MKJV)) he had been around a long time, crippled. Now he was walking. The Sanhedrin can’t deny the truth of the miracle. It happened. So they start their questioning with asking: “By what power or what name did you do this?” They can’t deny it was done. If you are ever looking for evidence that Jesus heals after He left this earth – this is a case – for if it had been a fraud the whole Temple guardians would have made sure that was known. This flesh and blood evidence was bouncing before their eyes. We also see an undeniable difference in Peter who has changed from acting in a cowardly manner just after Jesus’ arrest to now being a bold spokesman for the Lord. That is what we aim to become too. What made the difference? Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and in this situation Peter moves with that fullness of the Spirit in him – as we can do in any situation. Then Peter filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them basically that if you are silly enough to ask us to given an account for being kind to a cripple then what is the crime here? Well then I’ll tell you the truth and you and all the people of Israel need to hear it. We’ll read it together “And seeing this, Peter answered the people, Men, Israelites, why do you marvel at this? Or why do you stare at us, as though we had made this man to walk by our own power or holiness?” (Acts 3:12 MKJV) Peter goes on to say to the High Priest and teachers with him that Jesus is the only way to salvation and it is in Jesus’ name that we are saved. Those hearing that testimony in that room at that time do not appear to get the message. Yet we are told that many who heard Peter preach after the man walked believed the message and the number of men grew to about 5,000. It was a powerful message – if they were willing to hear it and believe in the name of Jesus. Do we all get that message clearly? That salvation and healing happen in the name of Jesus. I want to talk some more about the power of the name of Jesus but let’s note again the boldness of Peter and John in the face of those telling them to be quiet about Jesus. And not just anyone threatening them but the very ones who had Jesus crucified. The Sanhedrin then threaten Peter and John and forbid them to speak or teach in the name of Jesus. Peter and John both refuse to stop speaking about what they have seen and heard. This is the part that then astonishes – Peter and John go back to the believers and join in a prayer time – that is good. But after all the threats and persecution they pray for more boldness! And now, Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your Word, by stretching forth of Your hand for healing, and miracles, and wonders may be done by the name of Your holy child Jesus. (Acts 4:29-30 MKJV) So they are saying ‘More Lord more please’. And the place they are praying in shakes and they all are filled with the Holy Spirit again and speak the Word of God boldly. God was clearly pleased with that prayer! If anyone ever makes you feel bad for talking about Jesus or praying in His name or doing miracles in His name – just pray for more boldness, more confidence. Clearly God likes that sort of prayer. Now the message today is about the power of Jesus name. The power of Jesus’ name is immense. There is victory in Jesus’ name, There is life in Jesus’ name. There is power in Jesus’ name. There is healing and salvation in Jesus’ name. Philippians 2:9-11 tells us that God gave Jesus the name that is above every name “Therefore God has highly exalted Him, and has given Him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of heavenly ones, and of earthly ones, and of ones under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11 MKJV) We, as followers of Jesus just like Peter and John were, are to place our faith in the power of the name of Jesus. Boldly. We must not minimize the power of the name or the effectiveness of the name. John says at the end of his Gospel 20:31 “But these are written so that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you might have life in His name. (John 20:31 MKJV) Peter said to those who gathered after the crippled man was healed, Chap 3 v 16 “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, this one whom you see and know, His name made firm. And the faith which came through Him has given him this perfect soundness before you. (Acts 3:16 MKJV) To give an idea of the power of it I’d like to try a little demonstration. When we pray for healing in Jesus’ name or anything else – the whole power of God is what is doing it. We are just the floppy glove who couldn’t heal anyone on our own but when we speak boldly in Jesus name believing in the power of the name, God’s power flows. When we pray in the name of Jesus it is the full power of the Godhead backing the prayer up. So we can always confidently pray in Jesus’ name. Our faith is in Jesus and what He achieved on the Cross. Our faith is actually in the power of His name – as demonstrated by Peter and John. Now faith in Jesus’ name is not an optional extra for believers. Sometimes we tend to not think about what following Jesus means. But that is risky for whenever one enters into a contract one needs to know the expectations of that contract. When we ask Jesus into our lives and say we will follow Him we get eternity, and adoption into His family but we do need to learn the things expected of us. Look at v 23 in 1John 3. Let’s read it: And this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment. (1 John 3:23 MKJV) The command to love is huge too and in v 16 John defines what love is. I’ve got it underlined for us. It is talking about extreme love, ie laying down our lives for others. It is not saying that only Jesus should love that way but all of us. (By this we have known the love of God, because He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. (1 John 3:16 MKJV) ) But tempting as it is to talk about love, the message that is on God’s heart for us today is for us to understand that believing in the name of Jesus is a command. It is up to us to grow in that belief, to grow in the use of Jesus’ name and to grow in boldness and confidence in using it. We are not passive receivers of our faith or the journey of living it out. We can all grow in this area. I know I can. God wants us to understand that when we speak the name of Jesus in real belief, God does the miraculous, God does the impossible. Cripples are healed. There is no situation where the name of Jesus can’t be used. • Like Peter and John if people we know are saying don’t tell me about Jesus. Don’t talk about Jesus in this house, or this workplace. Pray like they did for more boldness, more opportunities. • If you don’t know what to do – pray in the name of Jesus for help, for ideas, for words, for actions. ‘Dear Jesus I ask in your name for you to show me what to do’. Or similar prayers. Be bold – expect Jesus to back His name up. Speak it with the knowledge that Jesus has given you and me exactly what Peter and John had. “What I have I give to you..” what did they have? The name of Jesus! I believe God is calling us to rise several levels in our faith in the name of Jesus – based on what the Word of God says so clearly to us about it. I once read an account of an American nun who was attacked in somewhere like Central Park in NY. As the man was about to rape her she spoke the name of Jesus and the man suddenly stopped and ran away in fright. She believed not only in the name of Jesus but that He was there with her and she was saved. I encourage us all to pray this week prayers that adore the name of Jesus, that honour his name and to pray believing in His name. One of the ways that we grow our faith in the name of Jesus is to speak prayers of adoration to Him about it, to exalt Jesus’ name and we will do that together as our concluding prayer in a minute. And after our prayer I’m going to suggest an exercise. Please join me in this concluding prayer adding your own words to exalt Jesus’ name: Dear Jesus I lift your name up. It is the name above all names. You are the Christ. You are the Good Shepherd; You are Emmanuel You are the Saviour You are the Redeemer You are the Rock You are the Son of God You are the Lamb of God You are the bread of Life. I honour and bless your name Jesus. I believe in your name Jesus, Son of God Risen Lord. I declare that there is salvation in no other name but your name Jesus. I believe there is healing in your name Jesus. I ask now please Jesus that you would expand and increase my faith and boldness and confidence in using your name to your glory. And I pray this in your name Jesus. Amen. In your hearts please add your own prayers that honour the name of Jesus and declare your belief in His name. What do you want to ask for right now in Jesus’ name? I invite you to ask now and then to honour and bless His name. May this message flow deep within Your Soul In Jesus Mighty Name Have a Blessed Jesus filled rest of Your Sonday and a Blessed Jesus filled rest of your week Until You return and Receive the Lords Word Again Have the Most blessed Jesus filled Sunday Folks I am, your very own Senior Pastora Dr Diana Brevan of Jesus Is Lord Fellowship WWI.
