Mosaics of the Metropolis Williamsburgh Savings Bank The interior of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank building (1927-1929) is a distinguished example of Romanesque Revival design. Its mosaic vaulted ceiling is made of glass and shows the stars of the first and fifth magnitudes against a blue sky. It incorporates the signs of the zodiac together with their mythological figures. The ceiling is the work of the painter Angelo Magnanti (d. 1969) (whose work can also be seen in the interior of the Dollar Savings Bank in the Bronx). The Williamsburgh Savings Bank’s architect, Robert Helmer, wished the building to “be regarded as a cathedral dedicated to the furtherance of thrift and prosperity.” Photos: BLUEJAKE, Wired New York
